Before settling down and becoming a copywriter for HostelBookers.com Paul Scottyn did a backpacking tour of Brazil, he checked out a variety of the country's budget accommodation, including a number of most Rio de Janeiro Hostels.

Rio de Janeiro is one of the world's most extensive tourist treasures, and many visitors are left with little idea of where to start. Make no mistake however, stepping out of their Rio de Janeiro hostel, budget backpackers are often will have no end of things to do.

Catering for both affluent and budget tastes in equal degrees, choice is a prevailing theme in this non-stop South American tourist mecca.

Beaches

The Copacabana and Ipanema beaches are some of the most notorious destinations in the world, let alone in Brazil. Both have songs dedicated to their delectable and often romantic allure, and sum up the blend of sun, sand, sea and fun that explains why so many tourists find Brazil irresistible.

Most of the beaches are packed full of lively locals, or Cariocas, as much as by tourists, which only adds to the authentic feel of a trip to Rio. However, tourists do just as well to take a more removed view of this beautiful Brazilian landscape too.

Rio Mountains

There is little better place to get a holistic view of Rio's city life than from the teetering top of the stunning Sugar Loaf Mountains. A tramway between the two ensures maximum photograph opportunities, and can be easily reached from most Rio de Janeiro hostels by bus.

However, Sugar Loaf is exceeded by the stunning iconic Christ the Redeemer statue, overlooking the city from the Tijuca Forest National Park. This 19th Century statue also sits atop its own peak, Corcovado Mountain, and was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Carnival

Rio may be resoundingly picked out for its wonderful nightlife among all who visit her shores, but the party lifestyle of Brazil truly comes to life at the Rio Carnival, which takes place every year.

This two-week party is well worth the effort of securing Rio de Janeiro hostel accommodation, with ever-changing variations of the parade theme found around almost every corner.

Tourists should be prepared for incessant dancing, the constant thump of live samba and other traditional Brazilian musical themes and one of the greatest visual spectacles, comprising extravagant costume, floats and people, the world has ever seen.
