It's certainly not easy maintaining a household given the ever-increasing costs of basic utilities. It's expensive enough just putting food on the table, but you also have to make sure that your income can always stretch to paying for the major utilities such as electricity, gas and water.

If your household is like most then it's likely that your kids contribute significantly to your utility costs. Given this, it only makes sense to get them on board when it comes to reducing these costs. And when you do this, you can feel good about doing your bit to save the planet too.

It is no secret that kids love electronic games, as this is a great way to pass the time and is surely fun. If your house has a video game console or computer that you allow your kids to play games on, try to assign a time when the kids can play with it. You shouldn't let your kids play with their video games around the clock, as this will result in soaring electricity bills. Remember that when playing on video game consoles the kids will also use the television. This means a double helping of electricity will be consumed.

Assign a time for video games and never allow the kids to exceed. It is advisable to keep a limit of one to two hours of gameplay during weekdays and four hours during the weekend. Also make sure that your kids study first before they plug in their consoles or even computers.

Another thing you should do is ask your kids to unplug their electronic gadgets when not in use, as these devices eat up electricity even when in stand-by mode. This practice can also have the desirable side effect of encouraging them to tidy things away after use.

Another household resource you should take proper care to conserve is water. Kids usually enjoy playing in water immensely but you should limit their use of the bath and shower. A smaller, child-size bath is a much better, water-conserving option than your full-size bathroom bath at childrens bath time.

And whilst we're on the subject of conserving water, it may surprise you to learn that an amazing amount can be wasted during the simple act of teeth brushing. You should take steps to encourage your children to turn off the tap whilst in the action of brushing their teeth and only to turn it back for the duration of rinsing the tooth brush. They should also be told to only use a small cup of water for gargling.

In order to help control the cost of your utility bills, the kids need to be involved in working towards efficiency. It is always helpful when a child becomes responsible at an early age, as he or she will carry this teaching with them to adulthood. Parents should also realize that maintaining a household is basically a team effort and all of the family members should play their part.
