The Pearl of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia's ancient southern city of Dubrovnik is steeped in fascinating history and beautiful monuments and attractions. Its blend of modern and ancient culture and brilliant coastline make a holiday in Dubrovnik hostels a truly unforgettable experience.

City Walls and Towers

These stunning historical monuments have come to define Dubrovnik's architectural landscape, encircling the whole of the city and unusually remaining almost entirely in the same condition as when they were built.

Originally built as a protective measure for the city, its constant reconstruction during times of conflict also serve as a fascinating monument to the city's turbulent past, with the history literally etched into its varied brickwork.

One of its most famous towers is the Lovrijenac Fortress, which boasts incredibly thick walls to safeguard the city's occupants from enemy attacks. Inscribed above its massive entrance is a famous phrase that captures the walls’ purpose, roughly translated as "liberty should not be sold, even at the price of gold."

Sponza Palace

One of the more dramatic architectural attractions among the many monumental structures that Dubrovnik has to offer, Sponza Palace is one of the most inspiring designs from the famed renaissance architect Paskoje Milicevic.

The Renaissance palace survived a major 17th century earthquake completely in tact, which only adds to its charm. Originally conceived as a thoroughfare and meeting place for international merchants to trade, it is now home to an art gallery.

St Ignatius Church

This fine piece example of Baroque design is located in the city's Old Town and is a beautifully constructed and detailed church that will leave visitors in awe of its beauty.

Constructed over two centuries, it also serves as a venue for the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, which sees the city's Croatia hostels packed with travelers keen to experience this vibrant event.

The church also enjoys a unique historic atmosphere, lent to it by the surrounding ancient buildings of the Old Town that underline the huge sense of historical significance that Dubrovnik manages to conjure up among its visitors.
