Work is being moved from two Tennessee plants. Whirlpool Corp. wants to hire 100 people immediately at its plant just north of Tulsa, the appliance maker said Wednesday.
“They’re looking for these employees right now,” company spokeswoman Monica Teague said. The jobs will be on production lines for free-standing ranges that were shifted from two company facilities in Tennessee. Benton Harbor, Mich.-based Whirlpool phased out more than 700 jobs at plants in Lavergne and Cleveland, Tenn., beginning last year.
Many of the remaining jobs are being transferred to Celaya, Mexico, the company said previously. Whirlpool employs more than 70,000 people worldwide.
The Tulsa facility will ramp up production this month to add the Maytag, Amana and Jenn-Air brands. Whirlpool acquired Maytag Corp. in 2006. “We’re excited about the positive impact this will have in the Tulsa labor market,” Whirlpool vice president Jim Gifford said in a news release.
Whirlpool’s Tulsa plant currently produces gas and electric freestanding ranges under the Kitchen- Aid, Whirlpool, Inglis, Roper, Estate and IKEA brands. The facility employs about 1,200 people. Teague could not give specifics about what types of applicants are needed nor the pay range. All applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
The Tulsa factory, built in the Cherokee Industrial Park along U.S. 75 at 76th Street North, opened in 1996. Whirlpool’s original $100 million plant spanned 573,000 square feet and later added 300,000 square feet in a $12 million expansion.
The plant’s construction was partially funded from a sales tax approved by Tulsa County voters. The company assumed ownership in 2005 after meeting a $250 million payroll commitment three years earlier than expected.
